In what was clear proof that you
don't need glossy records to make a
good fight, Nika Bigvava won the
vacant World Boxing Federation (WBF)
International Super Middleweight
title on Saturday night, May 24.
At the New Sports Palace in Tbilisi,
Georgia, local man Bigvava beat
Freeman Mabvonwe from Zimbabwe in a
ten round war, with the spectators
on their feet from start to finish.
Bigvava was better in most rounds,
but it was never-the-less a close
and competitive affair where both
men had their moments.
The scores, 99-91 (Gela
Skhirtladze), 98-92 (Vaja
Tsatsiashvili) and 100-90 (Davit
Nazarashvili) appears too wide and
doesn't do the effort of Mabvonwe
justice.
Now 7-7-1 (4), Bigvava won his first
professional title and at only 23
years of age he has time to develop
into a force, despite his current
mediocre record. Mabvongwe (27)
drops to 8-6 (5).
The fight was promoted by Boxing
Group Promotions.
